mother’s day: 118/365

Mother’s Day in our neck of the woods looks like church and lunch at the country club, but at some point when the kids were little, I said,

Wait a minute. If this really is my day, if this is a day for me, if this is the day I get to do what I want, then I want a day off from being a mother. I want a day to be myself.

A lot of people, including my kids, thought I was awful–choosing to be by myself on Mother’s Day–but they got used to it and came to enjoy teasing me about it.

My wish for all the mothers out there: that you are having the kind of day you want or need–whatever that day may look like.
