summer car trips

“When enough years had gone by to enable us to look back on them, we sometimes discussed the events leading to his accident. I maintain that the Ewells started it all, but Jem, who was four years my senior, said it started long before that. He said it began the summer Dill came to us, when Dill first gave us the idea of making Boo Radley come out.”

Harper Lee, To Kill A Mockingbird

I read it in school.  I read it again in June of 2006.  I’ve listened to it on CD read by Sissy Spacek.

Sissy Spacek is Scout.

I cannot recommend the CD highly enough.  In fact, I often sit in my car listening, even after arriving at my destination.  It is that good.  Listening to it makes me want to read the book all over again.

Perfect for summer. Perfect for car trips. Or for any kind of trip. Perfect.

    • Let’s see, Richard… I read it for the first time in high school, then five years ago, then listened to it on CD….so…no, I’m afraid I’m going to have to disagree with the great Ms. O’Connor. : )

      How’s the new bio?

      • I liked the bio a lot. It gave me some insight into her. I was very curious about where her central concern, pride, came from. And about her relationship with her mother. Like Harper Lee, she had a difficult relationship with her mother. Both women killed off lots of mothers or maternal figures between them!

        • Ha! That’s funny. And thanks for the feedback about the biography. It’s hard to keep up with all the great books. My stacks just seem to get taller–never smaller : )

  1. It doesn’t matter how much one enjoys reading the book, listening to Sissy Spacek is absolutely spectacular and adds to the experience of the novel (which I personally think is great) – I have to agree w/ my better half- she is Scout.
